At this time of year, it can be so tempting to enthusiastically begin creating our New Year affirmations, intentions, personal goals, theme word/s, and Vision Boards of all shapes and sizes. We seem to rush right on into the finish, leaping over the line to ring the bell and start running even faster toward the New Year and all its potentiality. And as you break out the new calendar, colored pens and pencils, fresh journals, and all of that, I’m going to encourage you to take some time to pause and reflect. Why? Because it can be instructive to look at what last year was like for you. To identify your biggest learnings, celebrations, challenges, take-aways, and winnings so that from that place, you are able to build a solid foundation for an amazing 2024.
So, over the next couple of days, I encourage you to carve out some precious time to honor and celebrate this past year. This process has helped me to celebrate my accomplishments as well as identify where I will choose to focus my time and energy in 2024.
For example, for many years I noticed there was a high level of activity related to career & success and from that awareness I made a conscious choice to prioritize work/home life balance in 2023. Moving forward to 2024, my intention is to deepen that practice of being fully present to the days I choose to work (which are being reduced) and to play more intentionally and to create more art.
This reflection process can become an annual ritual. What I love about it is the gathering of data.
If I did not take this review, I’d most likely do that whole “stinking thinking” thing and sell my results short. Doh! The good news is that you can make this be fun, celebratory, and useful in identifying what you learned to take that forward. Plus, with our rampant use of social media, cell phone cameras, and the storing of this data, it can be like a trip down memory lane, just by scrolling and swiping!
Eager and ready to begin? Start with a relaxation process. That can be listening to a song, watching the flame of a candle, listening to a guided meditation, or simply breathing in and out. Next, imagine turning back the clock to January 1, 2023.
- Who were you in January?
- What did you wish would happen this year?
- How did you want to feel in 2023?
- If you had an affirmation for the year, what was it?
- How did that manifest for you?
Here are some other insightful reflection questions:
- What are you most proud of?
- What was your biggest challenge?
- What did you celebrate?
- Where did you travel to?
- What did you enjoy that you definitely want to do more of in 2024?

What delightful surprises showed up for you?
And my favorite question of all: HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE YOU? Seriously, comment below and tell me what action step you will take to really honor all that you experienced in 2023. Consider this an emotional “raise” for a “job well done.” You decide the raise amount as the budget is infinite.
Allow yourself to feel how good it feels to recognize how far you’ve come. Notice what it feels like in your body to honor your achievements.
Let the energy and your feelings of this reflection fill you up! Soak in the magic and mystery of 2023. Trust that as that year wrapped itself up in the proverbial bow, you got everything you needed and that even more possibilities, prosperity, and wonder awaits you.
