Financial Alchemy: Transforming Our Money Beliefs

Al·che·my: a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination

I don’t know about you but when I was growing up, we never talked about money.  Ever. It was considered not only rude, but extremely rude to ask what someone made for a living or how much they paid for something.  As I am typing that sentence, I can actually hear my mother’s voice using the word extremely.  Apparently, she wanted to emphasize her conviction.  Well, high five mom, it worked!

Interestingly enough, this belief was recently tested and WOW was it uncomfortable!

Journey to Success: From Financial Mess to Dream Homes

By now, many of you are aware that Kim and I purchased our 1925 vintage pink bungalow and tiny little blue cottage in Florida.  Our minds reel a bit when we think about how quickly our wish came together, supplying us with not just one house, but two!  Suffice it to say that *this* is the very reason that when we are working with affirmations, it is extremely beneficial to add, “this or something better!”

To back it up a bit, we had a big dream.  Which was shared in last month’s Love Letter entitled, “Our Biggest Wish Came True.”  Behind the scenes however; for a good part of our relationship, we had a financial mess!  I darn near bankrupted myself (spent all of my retirement money) and Kim hadn’t filed his taxes in years.

This resulted in over $50,000 in back taxes, interest, and penalties due to Uncle Sam.  Over $50,000!! There was an extensive amount of time where we both drove used cars and for the first time in my life, I found myself on the side of the road, broken down and needing help.  This from the GM kid that always drove a brand spanking new car from the age of nineteen.  And for me, one of the most devastating transactions during this crisis was having to sell my treasured (and almost brand new) 2000 Pontiac TransAm.

We went through several CPAs and thousands of dollars to overcome this mountain of misery. Finally during a moment of vulnerability and pushing past the money shame, I shared with a trusted banker friend (gasp) our plight.  And it was in that sharing,  where a spark was ignited that began to transform our money matters.  We were introduced to Harry Weber, CPA extraordinaire.  He is an extremely knowledgable CPA and one hell of a great guy! It’s a bit like the quote: “Money is like fertilizer.

Financial Alchemy: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

It makes whatever it touches grow.” Very simply stated, if a “good” person has money, they can do more good, (Oprah).  If a “bad” person has more money, they can do more bad.  Harry is a good fertilizer.  Our past two CPAs were bad fertilizer.  We put money into both and the outcomes were vastly different! It’s so true that what we put our time, energy, focus, and money into GROWS!

One of the very first things that Harry suggested we do is make a phone call …

You see, we were hoping for an Offer in Compromise with the IRS.  But after phoning Harry’s ex-IRS agent friend, (that was golfing at the time) that dream was dashed! A door closed.  Which conversely means, a window opened.  The window of opportunity to do things differently!

Our united mission was to go from financial mess to financial success.

Leading up to the mortgage loan closing, we were faced with several hurdles.  The final task was facing the old belief of being “extremely rude” in asking money questions.  We had to obtain copies of Kim’s family’s corporate tax returns.  Full disclosure is that when I read the email request, tears of fear rolled down my face.  Kim’s initial reaction was anger.  My “little girl” broke down.  We were each battling our own money beliefs – and – pushing through because our end goal was in sight.

On a Sunday, we opted to put aside all of our concerns, discussions and hopes to allow ourselves one full day of nothing but laughter.  We watched funny movie after funny movie.  On Monday morning, just like magic, the email arrived in our inbox:

“You’ve been cleared to close.”

Yep.  We not only achieved the actualization of our Florida home(s), we closed the door on the past.  Stepped into our bright and shiny future.  We experienced financial alchemy.  This or something better!
